Community acupuncture

Welcome to Kenneally Community Acupuncture

What is Community Acupuncture?
Kathleen uses a specialized process that allows multiple people to receive treatment in a shared space while you still receive personal attention and care.

In our clinic, acupuncture is given in a quiet, relaxing, group healing room in comfortable reclining chairs.

There is no disrobing because Kathleen uses points on the legs, arms, and head. All you have to do is roll up your sleeves and pant legs.

The points on the extremities can be used to effectively treat many conditions, including back pain. Kathleen may use “distal” points, which are points far away from the area of concern. For example, points on your opposite leg and ankle can be used to treat shoulder pain. This method is not only highly effective but also accessible in a community setting.

Treating patients in a community setting has many benefits:

  • It’s easy for friends and family members to receive treatment together.
  • It’s often comforting to the patients, the collective energetic field nurtures the entire group.
  • It makes acupuncture affordable.
  • Regular treatments improve quality of life, reduce isolation, pain and suffering and allow people to come in more often to support their healing journey.

Arriving Late and Cancellations

We realize your time is valuable. Ours is too.

We hold an appointment time just for you. To get the most out of your time with us, and as a measure of respect to your fellow patients, it is crucial that you arrive on time for your appointments.

If you’re more than 15 minutes late for your appointment, we may need to reschedule it.
Please be aware that we require 24 hours notice for cancellations. If less than 24 hours notice is given or an appointment is missed without notice, a $30 fee will be assessed.

You’ve Booked. Now What?

Help make your experience a good one.

  • If you’re a new patient, before your first community acupuncture appointment, you’ll meet privately with Kathleen at the Newhall office location for a 30-minute evaluation. During this time, we’ll discuss your health history and address any concerns to help determine a course of treatment.
  • If this is your first acupuncture experience at Kenneally Acupuncture and you haven’t already filled out your paperwork online, please arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out the paperwork prior to your appointment.
  • Please DO NOT wear perfume, aftershave, scented lotions, or fragrant hair products; some of our patients are highly sensitive to strong scents. (We appreciate your help in making community acupuncture accessible to everyone.)
  • Please turn off your cell phone. Our community acupuncture sessions are designed to provide a peaceful and comfortable environment.
  • Please wear loose clothing, so you can roll up your sleeves above your elbows and pant legs above your knees. Remove your shoes and socks and then sit back and relax.
  • The treatment room has soft, soothing music playing, but you may bring earplugs or headphones if you prefer to listen to your own music.
  • We’ll have eye masks available for a nominal fee of $3.00 or you may bring your own.
  • Don’t plan to engage in any strenuous activity right after receiving acupuncture. It’s best to let your body relax afterwards.
  • It’s important to drink at least 8 oz of water after your session and throughout the rest of the day. Proper hydration helps the body heal.

The Routine

If you’re a new patient, your first step is to book your private consultation with Kathleen at the Newhall location to discuss your needs and suggest a treatment plan that includes how often to come in and when to evaluate your progress.

Once you’ve had that first consultation or you’re a current patient, you’ll book an appointment for your community acupuncture session.

On the day of your appointment, you’ll check in at the front desk of the Ice Wellness & Recovery Center. Kathleen will meet you there and discuss the treatment for the day.

You’ll then be given a number that corresponds to a recliner in the group treatment area.

When you enter the treatment area, each recliner will have a numbered white bin for you to put your shoes, socks and any other personal belongings in.

Choose a recliner, remove your shoes and socks, roll up your pants to your knees, your sleeves to your elbows, lean back and relax.

Conversation in the treatment room happens at a whisper or a low voice–most likely there will be at least one other person having a restful “acu-nap.”

After the needles go in, just relax and let them do the work. The treatments last approximately 30 minutes.

Enjoy this time in our peaceful healing space filled with ambient music and soothing visuals. If you prefer your own music, please bring your own music device or ear plugs if you would prefer silence.

Blankets will be provided; however, please feel free to bring your own.

Often patients fall asleep in the chairs, or fall into a deep sense of restfulness. If you need to be done by a certain time and don’t want to be checking your watch, please let us know at the beginning of the treatment.

If you’re ready for the needles to be removed, just open your eyes and give your acupuncturist a meaningful look or nod and we’ll come check on you.

Otherwise, when your time is up, we’ll remove the needles and you’ll be on your way!

FAQs

How often should I come?

Kathleen will consult with you about the number of treatments necessary for your condition, which will depend on the individual, the condition being treated, and the severity of that condition. Although you may experience some effects immediately, such as relaxation and temporary pain relief, it may take 3-5 treatments to see initial benefits.

Substantial improvement can require 10 or more treatments. Once progress has been made, the number and frequency of treatments can be reduced.

Will I have private one-on-one time with Kathleen?

These community acupuncture treatments are highly focussed and have limited privacy as you’ll be treated in a community setting. If you wish to have a longer and more private session with Kathleen, that will need to be scheduled at a different time.

How do I know if I should book a 1-on-1 Session?

Community acupuncture does not diagnose or treat serious conditions. Some patients may require a more in-depth acupuncture session for more complex health issues.

In this case, one-on-one appointments allow for acupuncture along with the application of different modalities such as cupping, far infrared heat therapy, light massage, NAET allergy elimination treatments, Reiki Energy Healing, Essential Oil treatments, Celluma Light Therapy, Amethyst Bio Mat, nutritional evaluation, herbal consultations, health counseling and intuitive mentoring.

Do you accept insurance?

No, we do not accept insurance for community acupuncture. As a courtesy superbills may be available upon request to submit to your insurance company.

How long is my appointment?

Treatment time varies from patient to patient, but an average appointment is around 30 minutes.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture is a relatively safe and pain free procedure but it does carry slight risks. The most common risks are bleeding at 1 or more of the acupuncture points and bruising at 1 or more of the acupuncture points. More unusual risks are hematomas (a small ball of blood that forms under the skin), feeling like the needle is still in or tingling even after removal and dizziness. The risk of infection is minimized by using single use, sterile needles and maintaining a clean environment

What if I am afraid of needles?

Acupuncture needles are much thinner than the hypodermic needles at your doctor’s office. The needles are made from stainless steel that is so fine most people do not feel any discomfort with insertion. Most people find that their initial anxiety fades and they can relax once the needles are inserted. If you’re afraid of needles, please let us know and we’ll do everything we can to make you comfortable.

Is my privacy protected in the community setting?

We do everything we can at Kenneally Acupuncture to protect your privacy. There are several ways of helping to ensure your privacy such as soft music playing, white noise machines, and speaking in whispers.

You’ll not be disrobing and we’ll be using points located mainly on your head, hands, feet, arms and legs. Most often others around you in the treatment room are resting with their eyes closed.
